Traumatic events can have a profound impact on us. Experiencing one of these tragedies can change your worldview and leave you dwelling on discomforting thoughts. It can be difficult to communicate the stress of these experiences to others, even close loved ones, who have not gone through it themselves.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the term used to describe the anxieties, fears, and depression people feel after a traumatic event. Most people will experience some symptoms of PTSD following these events. As difficult and isolating as these feelings are, there are people who can help. I have experience counseling clients with PTSD. I can teach you strategies for coping with the symptoms and managing PTSD so that you can live your life the way you want.

Symptoms of PTSD
It is possible to go through a traumatic event and not even realize it. There is no single definition of a traumatic event. Though commonly associated with veterans, PTSD can affect people who have been involved in car accidents, been in abusive relationships (emotional or physical), lived through natural disasters, witnessed a traumatic event, survived sexual assault, or been diagnosed with a serious disease.
You may experience the following symptoms after a traumatic event:
- Reliving the traumatic event through flashbacks or nightmares
- Drowning feelings or thoughts with drugs and/or alcohol
- Avoiding people and activities that you used to enjoy
- Difficulty sleeping
- Irritability and angry outbursts
- Difficulty concentrating
- Feelings of isolation and hopelessness
- Difficulty trusting others
- Guilt, shame, and self-blame
If there is a history of depression, PTSD, anxiety, or other mental illnesses in your family, you will be more susceptible to PTSD. This is not something to feel ashamed about. Take the right step for yourself and your future, and get help today. Others have found ways to address this problem and you can too.
